Nigerian scholar and sustainability leader Prof. Ademola Adenle has become the first-ever recipient of the World Academy of Sciences – M.S. Swaminathan Award for Food and Peace. The award, presented by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, is widely described as a “mini Nobel Peace Prize.”
The honour celebrates Prof. Adenle’s groundbreaking work in food security, climate justice, and rural empowerment across Africa and beyond. As Senior Special Adviser on Agricultural Innovation to Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture, he has championed policies and projects that link science with social equity, spanning agricultural innovation, biosciences, renewable energy, and public health.
Prof. Adenle will soon launch the Women in Biosciences Initiative, boosting rural productivity through training, entrepreneurship, and technology adoption, while addressing malnutrition, waterborne diseases, and energy poverty in partnership with the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation.
“This recognition strengthens my resolve to transform agriculture, improve livelihoods, and build a sustainable future,” said Prof. Adenle, dedicating the award to smallholder farmers and rural communities.
The award underscores the rising global influence of African scientists and calls on governments, development agencies, and researchers to unite for a food-secure, equitable, and sustainable world.
